Great news from Rotterdam (NL)! Black Rhino Naima, 8 years old, is pregnant and expecting her second calf after giving birth to Mara in 2017. Fantastic news for the Eastern Black Rhino metapopulation in Europe in which, for the current year, only Naima seems to be expecting. We want also to remember that at the beginning of 2020 a little male was born in Wales and alsot that is not clear if Kumi in Magdeburg is pregnant too.

Here you can see the video (it’s in Dutch) with the pregnancy announcement and you can see, if you watch closely, her big belly: we want also to remember that, aside from Mara, Rotterdam hosts also dad Vungu and last year transferred the other female that was residing in the facility, Wanda, whom unfortunately was never able to conceive

The last important note is that is unknow if Rotterdam Zoo will be keeping Black Rhinos in the future. At the moment we can’t wait for the second calf from Naima that should arrive in November.
